In the days of wooden hulled ships, the Teredo Worm was a major problem.
Not really a worm, but a mollusk up to 600mm long, it could bore large holes in ships planks and dockside installations until they were destroyed.
The wood used in this bowl was found on a beach in Alaska many years ago. It was probably a log of Douglas Fir, which drifted out to sea, was attacked by Toledo Worms and then drifted back ashore
Quited difficult to work with, because it is so soft, it makes a very elegant conversation piece
