A bowl is usually made exclusively by "faceplate turning" (or, to be honest "chuck turning" nowadays), first the outside, then the inside
But most of the turning of this bowl is by "spindle turning", ie between centres. The chuck is only used for the final hollowing operation
And the spindle turning uses five different centres, and a very out-of-balance blank held at some rather odd angles
The turning technique is the same as that used for the tapering twisted four sided candlestick
In this case the "bowl" is like a very fat, very short candlestick
This is clearly an experimental project, but the technique could be developed to produce a shallow bowl with an interesting exterior
