The pair of tapering, twisted candlesticks is made by spindle turning. There are three to five different turning axes (as well as the central one)
The best results are obtained with two, three or four sides, and the candlesticks may be made with a "right handed" or "left handed" twist
If each of the turning axes is parallel to the main axis of the wood blank, then a multi-faceted, but non-twisted candlestick will be made.
If the turning centres at each end are skewed, but they are the same distance from the main axis, then a non-tapered candlestick will be made
To achieve the taper, it is necessary to have the turning centres at one end much more widely spaced than those at the other end
The first attempt used a "tree" approach to achieve the widely separated centres
